Quigg Vs Munroe - Do not forget about this fight!

Scott Quigg Vs Rendall Munroe II takes place on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton comeback fight this Saturday. Now I won't actually be surprised if you're reading this and you didn't even know this fight is happening, and that's not your fault. Literally nobody is talking about this fight. I remember the first time it was announced, it was one of the most highly-anticipated British fights of the year, but now this doesn't seem to be the case.

Unfortunately the first time around the fight only lasted 3 rounds due to a cut caused by an accidental clash of heads. But it's been rescheduled and its happening again. Now there's an obvious reason why its not receiving as much attention this time around, and that's because its just chief support for a very, very big event for British boxing (the return of Ricky Hatton). But that's no reason to just ignore what, in my opinion, will be the fight of the night on November 24th.

Now obviously everyone is naturally going to be more excited about the Hatton-Senchenko fight, as I am too. But don't turn up late to the arena or tune in late to Primetime. If you've only planned to watch the main event then change your plans!

This a real 50/50 fight and not many people can pick a clear winner. I went with Munroe the first time and although Quigg was starting to take control of the fight in the 3rd, I'm gonna have to stick with "2 Tone" again. I just think his experience will give him the edge over a young, up and coming, talented Scott Quigg. I also think he has that little extra bit inside him that will enable him to dig deep if it does get tough in the late rounds.
Quigg is very, very fit. It has actually been scientifically proven that he's got a better fitness level than most marathon runners. But Munroe can take him to a place he has never been before and it will be interesting to see how Quigg handles this. Fitness is a huge factor in this sport but I believe heart is even more important. Let's see if he's got it.

There's no doubt that this is the toughest test of Quigg's career so far. Like most prospects, we know he's got talent but is he up there with the elite level fighters? Is he something special? Munroe has shared the ring with world class fighters such as Toshiaki Nishioka, who has been a serious pound-for-pound contender for a very long time. However, he hasn't faced anyone as tough and as fresh as Quigg recently so it will also be interesting to see how he handles this fight.

You still really have to class these two as the two best super-bantamweights in Britain. Carl Frampton has shown a lot of potential. The potential to be better than most at this weight division in the world today, but these two have done just a little more at the moment and probably just deserve to be ranked a little bit higher. In an ideal world the winner of this fight would face Frampton next but that's highly unlikely.. But, its boxing, we're boxing fans, and we can hope!

Super-bantamweight, like many other divisions in Britain, is starting to really heat up and that can only mean one thing; more excitement in the sport of boxing!

Frampton Vs Martinez confirmed for September 22nd!

Irish super-bantamweight prospect Carl Frampton.
The highly-requested bout between Irish super-bantamweight prospect and EBU champion Kiko Martinez has been confirmed for September 22nd. The fight has been talked about and negotiated for a very long time and has now finally come into place. The EBU title clash will take place in Belfast at the Odyssey Arena.

Kiko Martinez.
Martinez is actually fighting in Ireland this weekend (July 21st) against Dougie Curran. However, this is expected to be a relatively easy bout for Martinez so unless something remarkable happens, it should be an easy victory for Martinez.

This will be a big step up in class for Frampton and if he does get the victory, it will likely line him up for a fight with either Rendall Munroe or Scott Quigg, who are both two big domestic rivals. The 25-year old has looked amazing in his career so far and him and his promoter have been desperate for a chance like this for a very long time.

His Mexican opponent has actually fought in Ireland a few times before. The most memorable was his devastating victory over Bernard Dunne who he dispatched of in just one round. This will also be Martinez's toughest test in a very long time.

Quigg and Munroe left frustrated!

Quigg shows disappointment as fight gets called off.
The highly anticipated domestic clash between Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe suffered a huge anti-climax when the fight had to be stopped in the third round due to a cut above Munroe's right eye caused by an accidental headbutt. The decision was given as a technical draw.

Although we had only seen two rounds, the fight was looking too be a British boxing classic. Munroe had won the first round and Quigg just nicked the second. The fans were on their feet throughout the whole of the first two and a half rounds and were very disappointed when the fight was called off. Some people even booed the doctor, but there was nothing he could do. There was no way that Munroe could have continued with a cut like that.

In the post-fight interview, Quigg claimed that the headbutt was completely accidental and said: "It's boxing, It's just how it goes isn't it."

Munroe was very annoyed at what had happened. He said that he understood that the doctor had to stop the fight but also expressed his anger towards what had happened. The main thing that annoyed both men was the amount of work they had put in for this fight. Both of them claimed that they had trained harder than ever before for this fight, and technically, it was all for nothing.

Ricky Hatton, who promotes both fighters, feels that there has to be a rematch somewhere down the line.

"There's gotta be a rematch... As soon as Munroe's cuts healed up, immediate rematch," said Hatton.

The thing that made this even more disappointing for the people involved is that it was Hatton's last show on SkySports. The former world champ-turned promoter wanted to go out with a bang and this was the show that was meant to do it.

I'm sure that we will definitely see a rematch somewhere down the line, but it could be a very long time. It was the type of cut that will take a very long time to heal and could affect '2 Tone's' career in the long term.

Munroe-Quigg Winner Vs Carl Frampton looking less likely...

This Saturday (June 16th), the fans get to witness one of the biggest domestic fights of the year when the No.1 and No.2 super-bantamweights Rendall Munroe and Scott Quigg take each other for the title of 'The best super-bantamweight in Britain.' This is a great fight, but we all had something even better to look forward to. The winner of this fight was looking likely to face the highly rated up and coming prospect Carl Frampton. But now, this idea is looking less and less likely to happen.
The reason for this is that Quigg's promoter Ricky Hatton was dropped from Sky as his deal expired. This means that after this fight, none of Hatton's fighters will fight on SkySports. And here's the problem: Frampton is one of SkySports' most valuable fighters and will not fight on any other channel.

"Frampton is a Sky Sports fighter and I hope to be able to announce in the next couple of weeks my new TV deal," told Hatton. "So if you look at it from that point of view, the fight looks highly unlikely. When I was a figther, I wanted to fight the best and as a promoter I want to put on the fights the fans want to see. The TV situation makes things slightly more difficult - but you can never, say never."

There have been rumours that the winner of Quigg Vs Munroe could go on to face Guillermo Rigondeaux, a man who is probably one of the most dangerous up and coming fighters in the world right now. However, I doubt that Hatton would even consider putting one of these men in with Rigondeaux. Munroe and Quigg are very good fighters but I really doubt that they would even trouble Rigondeaux.

We will have a fight preview available on our site for this fight available on our site tomorrow morning.

Frank Maloney to retire from boxing!

Promoter Frank Maloney has announced that he plans to quit the sport, following the inquest of Olympic boxer Darren Sutherland (you can find out more about the Sutherland story in one of our recent articles).

Maloney will have to wait to 2015 as he still has commitments with existing contracts but he has said from then on ''that's it''.

The inquest to the death of Darren Sutherland concluded on Thursday with an open verdict. Speaking after the inquest about his intention to quit, Maloney said: ''My conscience is totally clear... I don't like how people try to paint people in boxing, I don't need the stress factor... I have had enough of it. I've had enough of people thinking we're all crooks and charlatans... I will never sign another boxer.''

Mr Maloney rejected suggestions that he threatened or put pressure on Mr Sutherland, and said he had no idea  why the boxer was frightened of him.

Maloney also said that he would be willing to meet Sutherland's family in the near future, stating: ''My door stays open... I've nothing to hide!''

Some of Maloney's past clients include Lennox Lewis and Rendall Munroe who both have won world and European titles.

Whether Maloney will be missed is a different question but nobody can deny that he has done a lot for the sport and his fighters.
