Carl Frampton returns to the stronghold that is the Odyssey Arena in Belfast this Saturday, when he makes the first defence of his EBU super bantamweight title against Frenchman Jeremy Parodi in a battle that also acts as an IBF world title eliminator. Additional seating has been added to a sold out capacity for what is set to be the biggest boxing event in the history of the venue, no mean feat considering the impassioned home support that ‘The Jackal’ has received there in his last two appearances.

"A-FORCE" SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT!  

On the night of February 23, at York Hall in Bethnal Green, the 29th edition of prizefighter served up a treat, with Audley Harrison topping the night off by creating prizefighter history! 

In the lead up to the International Heavyweights III prizefighter tournament, Harrison was in an extremely confident and positive frame of mind. The 41-year-old has the gift of the gab of course, and, as always, was in full flow! He had every right to be confident of his chances to win the trophy though, because he won prizefighter back in 2009 and he looked in fantastic shape as he weighed in at under 17 stones. But, coming in to the tournament, Harrison had been on the receiving end of a vicious knockout to David Price. which ended in just 1 round only 4 months earlier. Many interpreted Harrison's confidence as fear, but many interpreted it as assurance, that he would put the defeat to Price to the back of his mind and would win the trophy for a second time. Of course, there was only one way to find out, and that was to see Harrison back in the ring backing his words up!

They predicted a war and they got one.

Carl Frampton had to endure nine rounds of relentless pressure from the aggressive Kiko Martinez, before a hard right hand dropped the Spaniard for the first time in his career and relieved him of his EBU super bantamweight title.

Backed into a corner with fourteen seconds remaining in the ninth session of the bout at Belfast’s Odyssey Arena, the ‘Jackal’ delivered the short right with Martinez walking in to transfigure his opponent’s legs into jelly. Kiko the warrior attempted to get up but was back on his feet a little too quickly and after staggering into the ropes, referee Anssi Perajoki called a halt to the contest.

A contest it certainly was though and early in the fight it became clear that Frampton was in deeper than he ever had been before. Martinez had given the cut-throat gestures at the fiery weigh-in and reminded the Northern Irishman of his power in the second round, landing with hurtful shots when Frampton infrequently fought in close. However, the unbeaten challenger kept his head above water by boxing on the back foot, retreating as Martinez bombed forward with menacing pressure.

Carl Frampton vs Kiko Martinez - European and IBF Intercontinental Super Bantamweight Titles

On a wild night at Belfast's Odyssey Arena. Carl Frampton gave the performance of his career as he ripped the European Super-Bantamweight title away from tough Spaniard Kiko Matinez after 9 pulsating rounds. Frampton known as "The Jackal" performed so calm as he was put under so much pressure from the experienced champion. Those first four rounds was probably Frampton's toughest of his career as he was continually on the back foot using his speed of hand and foot to keep Martinez off him.

At the weigh-in the previous day Martinez gave Frampton the old cut throat gestures obviously hoping to get under his younger opponents skin. What was impressive was the way Frampton (8st 9 1/2 lbs) never deviated from his fight plan when he was under that pressure. I wrote in my notes that Frampton was boxing like an experienced fight, in fact Juan Manuel Marquez like. Martinez (8st 9lbs) came out in the first like a madman going after the Irishman. Frampton boxed beautifully though as he was able to jab and move whilst blocking most of Martinez shots. The second was better for the Spaniard as his left hook was beginning to land to the body slowing Frampton down. Frampton was also being kept on the ropes that little bit longer. More than enough for the Martinez to win the round on my card.

The third and the fourth were also close rounds to score. Frampton on my card took the third as again he was able to get that gap needed to deliver his own hooks and uppercuts. Martinez rallied in the fouth and looked to have rocked Frampton slightly near the end of the round with a left hook. Great fight.

Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton faces his ‘Judgement Day’ when he steps into Belfast’s Odyssey Arena this Saturday, when the Northern Irishman attempts to rip the European super bantamweight title from it’s tough Spanish holder Kiko Martinez. 

Frampton (15-0, 10 KOs) has been on a steep trajectory of late, culminating in the impressive sixth-round stoppage of former IBF champion Steve Molitor in September. The Odyssey was rocking that night as the hometown boy dominated the experienced Canadian in a performance that reverberated at world level, but the visiting fighter on this occasion will be no stranger to the atmosphere having entered the lion’s den many times before.

Martinez (27-3, 19 KOs) is a true champion of Europe having fought and won all over the continent and is undefeated on five trips to the Emerald Isle. He broke Irish hearts in Dublin when he stopped then unbeaten Bernard Dunne inside a round in 2007 and has set his sights on repeating that feat north of the border, by knocking out the Ulsterman Frampton this weekend. 

Both men have real firepower at the weight and both men come to fight, whilst neither man has tasted the canvas in their professional career. Martinez’s three losses were all by competitive decision, twice to Rendall Munroe and once to South African Takalani Ndlovu at altitude in Johannesburg.

Martinez sends out warning to Frampton!

European super-bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez travels to Belfast on February 9th to take on highly-rated Irishman Carl Frampton. The Spaniard goes into the fight as the slight underdog but he claims that he will KO his "un-tested" opponent. 

"I feel I will win by knockout, or they'll stop the fight (be)cause of the beating I'm going to put on him. That's how I see it in my mind," Martinez told WorldBoxingNews. 

"I don't worry about the judges. This is a great country for boxing, it's a serious title up for grabs and it's not Germany or France. They know about boxing here and the judges will be fair."

"I think Frampton will try to run, I think he'll box and he won't go toe-to-toe. I know I'm a lot stronger than him. When I'm in the ring with him, he won't want to fight with me. He knows it, his corner knows it and all of Ireland knows it."

Martinez is a well-known fighter in Ireland having fought there four times already, and has no worries of facing the home favourite in Frampton. He also believes that 'The Jackal's' most recent victory over former world champ Steve Molitor was not as impressive as some people think.

Frampton Vs Martinez confirmed for September 22nd!

Irish super-bantamweight prospect Carl Frampton.

The highly-requested bout between Irish super-bantamweight prospect and EBU champion Kiko Martinez has been confirmed for September 22nd. The fight has been talked about and negotiated for a very long time and has now finally come into place. The EBU title clash will take place in Belfast at the Odyssey Arena.

Martinez is actually fighting in Ireland this weekend (July 21st) against Dougie Curran. However, this is expected to be a relatively easy bout for Martinez so unless something remarkable happens, it should be an easy victory for Martinez.

This will be a big step up in class for Frampton and if he does get the victory, it will likely line him up for a fight with either Rendall Munroe or Scott Quigg, who are both two big domestic rivals. The 25-year old has looked amazing in his career so far and him and his promoter have been desperate for a chance like this for a very long time.

His Mexican opponent has actually fought in Ireland a few times before. The most memorable was his devastating victory over Bernard Dunne who he dispatched of in just one round. This will also be Martinez's toughest test in a very long time.
