David Price - What next?

By John Hoolan @JohnHoolan

David Price - Some decisions to make...
Having seen his attempt at trying to avenge a defeat to Tony Thompson turn to dust it must seem like a very lonely world to David Price at the moment. Even 3 weeks after he was stopped in the 5th, the future will very likely seem uncertain and he'll view it with a lot of trepidation.

David Tua retires from boxing...

Heavyweight boxer David Tua has announced his retirement from boxing, saying he has to walk away from the ring.

The 'Tuaman' who is aged 39 claims he retired because he is no longer capable of preparing physically and mentally for a fight in the squared circle.

If he truly has retired then he has ended his hopes of becoming the heavyweight world champion, something he has always said is his destiny.

"See my boots... One is on the ground and one is hanging up. Right now, as of this very moment, I am retired... I love it [boxing], it is my life. I may have retired from the game itself, but I will never retire from daily challenges... You always face challenges, no matter what."

Tua turned pro after he won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics at the young age of 19. He challenged Lennox Lewis for the heavyweight world title in 2000 but was unsuccessful.

Over his long career Tua has experienced many problems including his legal troubles with his former management which cost him around $4 million. This means that he will have to walk away from boxing with little rewards, financially and asset wise.

He currently sleeps in his boxing gym in Onehunga and occasionally stays at his mother's house.  Despite everything that has happened he still says he has no regrets: "I am very happy with what I have been able to accomplish so far. I don't live with regrets, and success for me will be my boys... There is nothing to be sad about. I have my health. Every day above ground is paradise."

No matter what, David Tua will be remembered as a great boxer by all boxing fans.

Lennox Lewis to return to the ring?

''For 100 million I'd come back'' were the words of former World Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis speaking to a German reporter.

Lennox Lewis in fight with Vitali Klitschko back in 2003.
Although it's hard to believe that he will ever return to the ring as he is now 46 and had his last professional fight back in 2003, but boxing fans can still hope that 'The Lion' will make a comeback and end the boredom of the heavyweight division.

This is actually the reason that Lewis is slightly contemplating returning. He believes that right now heavyweight boxing is at it's worst as the Kiltschko's are dominating and their fights are insanely boring.

''Right now, the heavyweight division is dead. The Klitschko brothers and their opponents are just filling their bags. Their opponents will not improve, they wouldn't have even made sparring partners with me,'' said Lewis to German paper Stern.

''At some point, the referee steps in and stops the fight'' he said. ''They are boring. If you are looking to decide the best boxer in the world it must be decided by an epic fight. Not this circus.''

To be fair to the Klitschko's, there is not really anybody capable of giving them an epic fight at this moment in time. Maybe the likes of David Price or Seth Mitchell in a few years time when the brothers are older and weaker but apart from that there is absolutely nobody. The last man that gave either brother an epic and memorable fight was Lennox Lewis himself when he clashed with older brother Vitali in his final fight.

Lewis then went on to talk about a possible return to the ring. ''For 100 million, I'd come back... For that I would take my pyjamas off and go to the gym.''

He has said many times before that he is too smart to come back, but has he changed his mind. Could this be the long awaited move that will add much more drama and excitement to the heavyweight division?

Frank Maloney to retire from boxing!

Promoter Frank Maloney has announced that he plans to quit the sport, following the inquest of Olympic boxer Darren Sutherland (you can find out more about the Sutherland story in one of our recent articles).

Maloney will have to wait to 2015 as he still has commitments with existing contracts but he has said from then on ''that's it''.

The inquest to the death of Darren Sutherland concluded on Thursday with an open verdict. Speaking after the inquest about his intention to quit, Maloney said: ''My conscience is totally clear... I don't like how people try to paint people in boxing, I don't need the stress factor... I have had enough of it. I've had enough of people thinking we're all crooks and charlatans... I will never sign another boxer.''

Mr Maloney rejected suggestions that he threatened or put pressure on Mr Sutherland, and said he had no idea  why the boxer was frightened of him.

Maloney also said that he would be willing to meet Sutherland's family in the near future, stating: ''My door stays open... I've nothing to hide!''

Some of Maloney's past clients include Lennox Lewis and Rendall Munroe who both have won world and European titles.

Whether Maloney will be missed is a different question but nobody can deny that he has done a lot for the sport and his fighters.
