WBC reject Alvarez Vs Trout!

WBC champ Saul Alvarez.
This time yesterday, it was looking very likely that WBC light-middleweight world champion Saul Alvarez would be facing the WBA champ Austin Trout in a unification bout on September 15th. But now, it has been revealed that the World Boxing Council (WBC) will allow the fight to happen.

A representative of the WBC commented on the situation: "We do not accept unification, because if we agree, we would be losing authority. We are not going to take away the exclusivity because we own the WBC brand."

Many people are very disappointed and annoyed at the WBC's decision to not sanction the bout. Although Trout was not the most ideal opponent that people wanted to see 'Canelo' face, there were still a lot of people who were looking forward to this fight.

It is still unclear as to who Alvarez will actually face on September 15th. At the moment it seems that just about every fight they have lined up for him, gets cancelled for some reason. The main names being discussed at the moment are James Kirkland (if he recovers from his injury), Carlos Molina and Acelino Freitas.

Trout could be next in line for 'Canelo'...

Austin Trout.
Over the last few months, Golden Boy have been desperately trying to find an opponent for their young star Saul Alvarez for September 15t. So far, they have managed to find three men that would have all made a great fight for the fans and Alvarez himself, but unfortunately, all three of these have fell through.

WBC champ Saul Alvarez.
'Canelo' was originally set to face young up and coming light-middleweight James Kirkland but Kirkland pulled out due to injury. Then an even better opponent was brought in. The former pound-for-pound contender Paul Williams. But unfortunately, Williams was in a tragic motorcycle accident that could potentially leave him paralysed from the waist down. So, at this point everyone was thinking that we would just have to see Alvarez fight a "nobody" on September 15th. However, two weeks ago, things got even better for fight fans. It was announced that Saul Alvarez would be fighting welterweight superstar Victor Ortiz. This was set to be the toughest test of the 21-year old's career and all Ortiz had to do was get a win against a half decent fighter named Josesito Lopez on June 23rd. But once again, another problem occurred. Ortiz lost the fight and had his jaw broken, meaning that there was no chance of him fighting Alvarez on September 15th.

Many people believe that all of this is happening because the "boxing gods" want to see 'Canelo' face Cuban light-middleweight prospect Erislandy Lara. However, it still seems as though this fight is not going to happen.

The main opponent that is being discussed right now is WBA 'regular' light-middleweight champ Austin Trout (25-0, 14 KO's). If it does happen, the bout will be televised live on Showtime and go head-to-head with the highly anticipated grudge match between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sergio Martinez. If this does happen, then I'm sure that the majority of the fans will be watching Chavez Vs Martinez on HBO which means Golden Boy and Alvarez will potentially lose a lot of money.

To be honest with you, this is a decent fight, but I don't think it will interest as many people as Alvarez Vs Kirkland, Williams or Ortiz would have done. Trout is a good fighter but just doesn't have the popularity to make this a headline fight on a PPV. Golden Boy would have to do a hell of a lot of hyping up to get people excited about this. The only thing that could get people a little more interested is that Trout has a win over Canelo's brother Rigoberto. This is something that Golden Boy will no doubt mention on plenty of occasions.

Alvarez Vs Ortiz made official!

Saul Alvarez with Victor Ortiz in 2010.
It's official! Saul Alvarez Vs Victor Ortiz has been confirmed for September 15th. This is one of the best fights that has been made this year and many people already believe that it could be a potential fight of the year if it lives up to it's expectation.

WBC light-middleweight champion Alvarez has had a lot of bad luck with his opponents recently. Firstly, there was the tragic motorcycle accident involving his original opponent Paul Williams, and then as a replacement he was set to face American up and coming talent James Kirkland. But, this fight fell through due to an injury suffered by Kirkland. However, none of this matters any more. We now have an even better fight to look forward to!
Ortiz and Lopez both have very exciting fighting styles and it seems almost impossible that the two young men will not provide the fans with a great night of entertainment on September 15th.

Ortiz already has a fight scheduled for June 23rd, but luckily for him it is looking to be a relatively easy night for him against Josesito Lopez. Providing that Ortiz does not lose or suffer an injury during that fight, the bout between him and Alvarez is a definite.

The fight will be shown on Showtime PPV and it is the first pay-per-view event since the Pacquiao-Mosley fight in May of last year. Showtime should have no problems getting fans to pay to watch this. I don't know a single boxing fan that will be willing to pay the small fee to watch such a fantastic fight. The event, which is named Knockout Kings, will feature a twist. There will be a $100,000 bonus for the fighter who scores the knockout of the night, which will be voted for by the fans. The reward is available to every fighter on the card, not just the televised fights.

The highly anticipated bout is made even more interesting due to the fact that both men are desperate to prove themselves. Ortiz is coming off of a knockout loss against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr so he wants to show the world that he is back and more ready than ever to carry on competing at the top level of the sport. Alvarez is completely different. He is coming off of one of the best performances of his career. On May 5th he retired ring veteran Shane Mosley and dominated almost every round of the fight. However, he still has his doubters and he wants to prove to them that at just 21-years old, he is already at the level to compete with the best fighters in the world.

What a great night it is looking to be. Two young and hungry fighters battling to prove that are the top fighter in the world at light-middleweight right now.

Alvarez Vs Williams being discussed for September 15th...

Former pound-for-pound contender Paul Williams.
A few weeks ago I wrote an article saying that James Kirkland was likely to be Saul Alvarez's opponent on September 15th but now it seems that former welterweight and light-middleweight world champion Paul Williams is the new hot favourite to step in the ring with 'Canelo' when he headlines his first PPV.

To prove that this is not just talk and Williams is actually being seriously considered, here is a statement from Golden Boy CEO Robert Schaefer: "I met with Al Haymon [William's advisor] yesterday, and we met with Canelo on Monday, so I'm trying to put that together. That would be a big fight for September 15th."

"We'll see, I'm going to be continuing to work on this today, and my hope is that within the next few days or by early next week that we can have the fight done and ready to announce."

WBC light-middleweight champ Saul Alvarez.
William's promoter Dan Goossen has also confirmed that there has been talks between the camps and he also called it "a great fight for the sport."

Williams (41-2, 27KO's) used to be a pound-for-pound contender and easily one of the best in the division. Now, he is a little past his best but like Kirkland, he will still provide a very good test for the 21-year old Mexican who is trying to prove that he is one of the best in the world. Williams is a very tall guy at the weight (6"2) and his style could cause big problems for Alvarez, who will be facing the toughest opponent of his career on September 15th if this fight happens.

So, at the moment it looks like we are going to see a great fight on September 15th, whether it is Williams or Kirkland. Both will be Alvarez's toughest opponent to date and both (more Kirkland) are still hungry for success. If I had to pick one out of the two, it would be very tough but I think I would just edge towards Kirkland because of his exciting 'bombs away' style that could test Canelo's chin as well as his talent.

Alvarez set to headline PPV... Kirkland is a potential opponent!

WBC world champ Saul Alvarez.
Mexican prospect and WBC light-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez is set to headline his own pay-per-view event at the MGM Grand on September 15th. To make things event better... light-middleweight contender James Kirkland is likely to be the opponent.

Kirkland (31-1, 27 KO's) is the perfect test for 'Canelo' (40-0-1, 29 KO's). He is a tricky and strong fighter but he does have some flaws technically. However, it will most likely be Alvarez's hardest fight to date and his first real test. You could argue that Sugar Shane Mosley was a tough opponent for him but in my opinion, Mosley was way past his best and didn't really come to win. Alvarez has a lot of doubters, which is probably the main reason that he took this fight. So he can prove to himself  and the fans that he was what it takes to mix it with some of the best fighters in the world.
James Kirkland.

The fight will be real easy for Golden Boy to make if they do chose Kirkland as the opponent. Both men are promoted by GB Promotions and both will jump at the chance of this fight as both feel they have something to prove.

Kirkland's last outing was against Carlos Molina. The referee made a very controversial decision to disqualify Molina because his corner man 'apparently' jumped into the ring whilst he was giving a count. Alvarez's last fight came on May 5th on the Mayweather-Cotto undercard. He was against 40-year old ring legend Shane Mosley. Alvarez dominated throughout most of the fight and was awarded the win by a unanimous decision.

If the fight does happen, it will definitely be one to watch. Both fighters are young, fresh and hungry. Whoever wins will have their career boosted massively but the loser could see their career ruined.

Team Molina want fight result changed...

The representatives of light-middleweight contender Carlos Molina have
spoken out about their fighters improper disqualification against James
Kirkland last Saturday.

“Referee Jon Schorle was in error of Texas rules last night when he
disqualified Carlos Molina and therefore the fight must be changed to a
No Contest ruling,” said Molina's promoter Leon Margules.

Schorle still claims that his decision was right as Molina's cornermen
entered the ring whilst the round was still ongoing. The bell had
definitely gone but Schorle was still giving a count to Molina. This
resulted in Molina being disqualifed.

The decision caused uproar with the crowd and massive controversy
amongst boxing fans worldwide.

Margules has repeatedly pointed towards Texas Commision rule 61.41
which states: When a round ends before a contestant who was knocked
down rises, the bell shall not ring, and the count shall continue. If
the contestant rises before the count of ten, the bell shall ring
ending the round.

Team Molina will also petition the WBC for an immediate rematch. Luis
DeCubas, Molina’s advisor stated, “I’m sure Golden Boy Promotions
(Kirkland’s promoter) will agree with me that an immediate rematch is
warranted. I remember their great concern for the improper actions of
ringsiders after Amir Khan lost to Lamont Peterson, so watching the
tape and seeing the obvious influence on the situation exerted by their
matchmaker Eric Gomez, who was standing behind the ringside officials
shouting at them to disqualify Molina… they must be mortified by his
actions and in search of an immediate rectification.”

Kirkland and his team have not yet spoke out about the situation.
