December 1st of next month Is a very special date for boxing fans. Why ? Simply because Miguel Cotto will be back In action against the stylish Austin Trout. Trout, who is from Las Cruces New Mexico, faces his hardest test to date against the war hardened Cotto , who is a legendary fighter from Caguas, Puerto Rico. 

Trout , who is the reigning WBA light middleweight champion is coming of a 12 round unanimous decision victory over Delvin Rodriguez and will enter the fight with Cotto very confident. He goes into the fight as the reigning champion with an undefeated record of (25-0-0-14ko's). Trout is well known for his fast hands and a slick and tricky boxing style, he is also a southpaw. 

Cotto has won five world titles in three weight divisions and is considered to be one of the best fighters coming out of Puerto Rico ever. In his last fight he fought pound for pound great Floyd Mayweather Jr. Although Cotto lost, it was a much closer and competitive fight than most people anticipated. Cotto was very competitive from the first bell to the last.

Just recently the boxing world found out that Puerto Rican Olympian and No.4 WBO ranked feather Orlando Cruz had come out as a gay man. In a "macho" sport like boxing, we were unaware of what the reaction would be to this story and thankfully the first official statement on the situation was a respectful one from Cruz's fellow countryman Miguel Cotto.

Cotto, who is without doubt Puerto Rico's biggest boxing star of recent years, had this to say:

"For many years Orlandito and I spent time together on the national team of Puerto Rico. We went to the Central, Pan American, World Championships, Olympics... I have a great appreciation for Orlandito."

"I congratulate him... Orlandito is my friend. I'm sure it wasn't easy for him, but I congratulate him. From this point forward he will see that his life will change a lot and things will be much better for him."

Now its inevitable that Cruz will receive some criticism for this at some points down the line but I think most of the boxing world and the respectful boxing superstars of today, along with the fans, will respect his decision and treat him the same as every other boxer out there.

Sergio Martinez expects Canelo to duck and fight Cotto...

WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is looking for a new challenge for the Spring of next year but believes that he may not be able to get some of the fights he wants.

'Maravilla' is coming off of a dominating performance over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and is hoping to face Mexico's other 'Golden Child', Saul Alvarez, in April or May of next year. The 37-year old has even stated that he would be willing to move down to 154lb to make the fight happen. However, he believes that this fight probably won't be happening anytime soon.

"Canelo has better and safer offers. After what happened to (Chavez) Junior, logic would tell me that he'll fight Cotto (because) there is less risk and more money," said Martinez.

Martinez has said that he will rematch Chavez Jr in the fall of next year but is really hoping for a "super-fight" with one of boxing's biggest stars before the rematch. And to be honest with you, he deserves one. The guy has done everything asked of him, fought everyone who's been offered to him and looked a class above all of them in the ring. He only wants one thing and that's a chance to prove he is the best pound-for-pound fighter out there today but unfortunately it looks like he isn't going to get that chance. In fact it looks like a rematch with the likes of Matthew Macklin is the most likely fight out there for him at the moment.

Who is the greatest of this era barring the 'Top 2'?

Nowadays when you ask the question "Who is the greatest boxer of this era?," you only really get two answers... Floyd 'Money' Mayweather and Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao'. For so long these have been the boxers that have been dominating most of the media coverage, debates and most importantly the money in the sport. What I want to know is.. Who would take the top spot if these two guys were around?

Now, this isn't just about who would become pound-for-pound No.1, its also about who would be considered the greatest. And in my opinion to be the greatest you have to be more than just technically skilled. You have to have something special about you. The ability to impact people, change their lives and most importantly let the world know who you are and make people want to watch you fight.

As always when I ask a question like this I want to know what the boxing public think or in Twitter terms the '#BoxingHeads'. So I posted the debate on Twitter and just expected replies regarding mostly the same couple of fighters. But it didn't turn out like that. There was at least twenty to twenty five different boxers mentioned and only a few were mentioned more than once.

Another thing that shocked me was that even up and coming prospects were getting mentioned. Boxers such as Adrien Broner, Kell Brook and even Chris Eubank Jr who has had no more that six fights. Now why I don't agree that these fighters should be considered great already, I took the thought into consideration and realised that these fighters are destined for greatness they're just not there yet.

Of course there were the obvious ones such as Miguel Cotto, Andre Ward and Juan Manuel Marquez (surprisingly nobody actually said the Klitschko's), and yes, these fighters are all great.. But who is the greatest? There was no clear verdict which made me realise one thing:

There is no real cemented definition for great. Greatness means something different to every single person in the world. Everyone has there own perception on who is great, especially in boxing. A sport where everything is debatable.

If I had to chose one fighter from this era to call 'the greatest' it would without a doubt be Floyd Mayweather. But seeing as he is excluded from this argument there is only really one other man out there... Juan Manuel Marquez.

Even at his current age (39-years old) he is still up there as a serious pound-for-pound contender and I think he is the only other fighter out there that you can put in the same bracket as Floyd and Manny.
The one thing I love about the Mexican is that he never fails to provide excitement and entertainment which is why the fans love him so much. I don't think there is anyone out there that can say they're not a fan of Marquez. He's not the stereotypical Mexican that you see powering through taking shots on the chin, he out-boxes and most of the time out-classes his opponents with ease. The guy has been in so many wars over the years but hasn't slowed down at all, he still fights like a fresh mid-twenties boxing technician.

Yep that's it really.. I consider Juan Manuel Marquez as the greatest of fighter of this era (except for Mayweather & Pacquiao). I'm sure there's a lot of you out there that disagree but that's what boxing's all about... OPINIONS! And I suppose every boxer that steps between those ropes are great in their own way.

According to Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions a deal has almost been reached for a fourth fight between boxing rivals Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39KO's) and Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38KO's). Now I don't need to go into detail about the controversial history between these two fighters as I'm sure almost every boxing fan across the world will know about the dodgy decisions in the three previous fights involving these two, so let's just go straight on to how the fight actually came about.

 

The fight had been rumoured for a very long time but there were other potential opponents out there for Pacquiao (rematches with Timothy Bradley & Miguel Cotto or the super showdown with Floyd Mayweather). But once again, the fight with Mayweather has been "pushed over to next year" (I wonder if "next year" will ever come), Miguel Cotto is tied up in a fight with Austin Trout and Pacquiao and his team don't want the fight with Timothy Bradley. So seeing as there is nobody else really out there at the moment and everybody believes that Marquez deserves yet another shot at "Pacman", this seems like the most logical fight at this current time.

 

Marquez's promoter Fernando Beltran claims that if the fight does happen, it will take place on December 8th. He also said that the fight is very likely going to happen, but stressed that it is not a certainty.

 

"The only reason that I can't guarantee the fight is [happening] is because there isn't a signed contract from Pacquiao in front of us. Nevertheless, in the next few hours we will have it. I can't say anything more because I am being conservative, but I can say that it is 95 percent done," explained Beltran.

 

K9 is now a free agent, Eyes Miguel Cotto...

IBF light-middleweight champion Cornelius 'K9' Bundrage has parted ways with his trainer and manager Manny Steward as he contract has expired and he does not intend to renew it. He is now a managerial and promotional free agent after his promotional contract with Don King ended earlier this year.

The former Contender series participant commented on the situation and claims that there are no hard feelings and it is nothing personal.

"I don't have any hard feelings or anything with my former manager Manny Steward. I kind of feel like how LeBron James felt when he became a free agent. He had a choice where he could stay with Cleveland or go to Miami and he went to Miami and became a world champion. My new manager will have it easy. He doesn't have to make me a champion. I am already a world champion. He just has to get me the big fights. He will be in a good situation," explained Bundrage.

K9 has been pretty inactive in the last few years of his career but his main target for the future is to become a more active fighter. His last fight was on June 30th where he knocked out Cory Spinks and that has been his only appearance in the ring so far this year.
At the moment, there is only one fighter that K9 wants, and that is Miguel Cotto.

"I would love to fight Cotto" said Bundrage. "He is a free agent just like me so a fight between him and me shouldn't be hard to make. I know he has a date to fight at Madison Square Garden in New York but he can come fight me here for my belt."

Cotto looking likely to move up to middleweight!

Former light-middleweight world champion Miguel Cotto has set a date for his return to the ring (December 1st) and he is even considering moving up to 160lb for the first time in his career. If he won a title at this weight, he would become the first Puerto Rican boxer to win a world title in four different weight divisions.

Although Cotto is a very, very good fighter, and no doubt one of the best in the world today, it would be very tough for him to become a dominant force at middleweight. He is only  5"7 and would be a lot smaller than most of the champions at 160lb. He is hoping that a catch-weight fight will be made.

"It's a very attractive option for me. We're analysing and studying to see if we can do it. Yes, it''s a motivation, to become the first Puerto Rican champion to win titles in four weight divisions," explained Cotto.

"I do not know [how high I could fight]. Those are things to discuss in the negotiations."

Cotto has ruled out any rumours and allegations that he will be the opponent for WBC light-middleweight champion on September 15th. 

"September is not a possibility. I have plans in my family with July. Fighting in September would be disrupting the plans that I have with them and that is something that I will not do."

The most likely opponent at the moment is the WBO interim-champion Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam. The Frenchman and his promoter have already revealed that they would be more than willing to fight Cotto in November. They also said that the right amount of money would overcome any potential issues about the weight.

Mayweather and Pacquiao announced as the two highest paid athletes in the world!

Who ever said that boxing is no longer a main-stream sport?.. Well, I don't know who said it, but they are definitely wrong. Forbes Magazine has released the list of the world's highest paid athletes from June 2011 through to June 2012, and guess who the top two are? Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao!

'Money' Mayweather made $85 million from his fights with Victor Ortiz and Miguel Cotto. Although, Pacquiao was second, his earnings were quite a long way off from his "sporting rival." The Filipino earned $56 million from his super showdowns with Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley.

The main reason that Mayweather's earnings are so much higher than any other boxer and also any other athlete is that he manages and promotes himself. This means that he collects every he makes from his fights, including tickets revenue, PPV buys and all sponsorships. With most of the other fighters in the sport, they get a considerable amount of money taken from their promoters. Now, I wouldn't advise every fighter to do this as it wouldn't pay off. You can sl*g Mayweather off as much as you want but you cannot deny that he is a very smart man. He takes complete control of his money and makes sure that he is always in charge.

There were only two other boxers on the list, and they were:

• Wladimir Klitschko - Ranked at No.24 and his total income was $28 million.
• Miguel Cotto - Ranked at No.75 with a total income of $19 million..

This isn't going to give boxing the extra boost that he needs but it is certainly an eye opener to the people saying our sport is dead. No matter what happens, boxing will always have die-hard fight fans that tune in for every fight.

Argument over Floyd Mayweather ends in death...

A 31-year old man named Allen Robinson has been accused of killing a 20-year old in Phoenix because he was offended that the young man was not a fan of world super-middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. The alleged shooter, Robinson has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police believe that Robinson along with another man approached the victim Francisco Suarez and a 19-year old friend outside of a convenience store. The two men asked the under-age men to go in and buy them alcohol as the shopkeeper would not sell it to them because he believed they were drunk. The conversation somehow turned into a discussion about Mayweather and Miguel Cotto who had fought each other just a few hours before. Apparently Robinson got frustrated and upset that the men weren't fans of Mayweather, he then fired a gun several times and killed Suarez.

The man who accompanied Allen Robinson on the night has turned himself into the police. More will come on this story when more information is released.

Simply too good!

Floyd 'Money' Mayweather proved to be simply too good for his opponent once again when he outpointed Miguel Cotto over 12 rounds.This victory showed us that he is still the No.1 fighter in the world and he has no plans of leaving that spot in the near future.

At the age of 35 and coming back from almost a year lay-off you would expect him to be be a little rusty but he was quite the opposite. He looked very comfortable at the weight and he started a lot stronger than he usually does, winning the first few rounds with ease. You could see Cotto getting frustrated as he was throwing hard and fast punches but he just simply couldn't land a punch on his illusive opponent. They looked as if they were about to land but at the last second Mayweather turned his shoulder or slipped his head and the punch just brushed past.

Cotto tried to come on strong in the middle rounds but he still didn't have much success. You could argue that he maybe won one or two rounds but it was nowhere near enough to persuade the judges. Every time Cotto threw a punch the crowd went crazy as a big percentage of the fans there were Puerto Rican. If you were sitting way back in the stands it may have looked like a much closer fight as Cotto was throwing a lot of punches that were almost landing, but the judges ringside had a perfect view that enabled them to make the right decision.

Mayweather lived up to his 'superstar' status by walking to the ring with a few of his good friends, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and wrestling star Triple H. Fellow pound-for-pound contender Yuriorkis Gamboa was also in the Mayweather entourage.

The question is now... Who next for Mayweather?

If the Pacquiao fight doesn't happen there is nobody else who really poses a threat to him. There were rumours that Golden Boy were planning a fight between him and young Mexican prospect Saul Alvarez who also fought on the card (beating Shane Mosley), but in reality he is nowhere near the level that Mayweather is on. Enjoy him why he is here because Floyd Mayweather is definitely something special and he will almost certainly go down as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

'Ring Kings' - Weigh-In Results, Details & Quotes...

The day has finally come! Floyd Mayweather Jr Vs Miguel Cotto and Saul Alvarez Vs Shane Mosley... It is expected to be the one of the biggest nights of boxing in the past 100 years. Something that supports this argument is the capacity for the weigh-in. Over 5,000 fans were there just to watch the fighters step on the scales. That number of fans is more than most prizefights attract.

Anyway, we will have more hype and build up for the fight later on, but now we will just give you all of the details and results from yesterday's weigh-in.

Alvarez and Mosley both looked in very good condition for as they walked onto the stage. Mosley was the first to step onto the scales and to his astonishment he was 1/2lb over the maximum weight (154). He was given an hour to shed it off. 'Canelo' weighed exactly 154lb and he looked stronger and healthier than he ever has before. Even for the chief support weigh-in the atmosphere was amazing. But, you could tell when
Mayweather and Cotto had entered the room. The crowd went crazy for both fighters although there were some boo's for Mayweather.

'Money' Mayweather was first to step on the scales and he weighed in at the heaviest he has ever been in his 42 fight career, but he seemed very happy to see 151lb come up on the scales. Cotto tipped the scales at 154lb and he looked a little dry which means he may have struggled to get down to the weight.

When the two fighters went face-to-face we finally got a bit of the trash-talking and tension we have been waiting for during the build-up to this fight. Neither of them moved a muscle for around a minute (except for Mayweather's vigorous chewing of his gum) until finally Mayweather opened his mouth and told Cotto what he has told every other fighter that has stood infront of him. "You can't beat Floyd Mayweather baby!" At first Cotto just shook his head but then after a few more harsh words from Mayweather he started to talk back. At one point it looked as if we were going to see the two of them have a fight 24 hours early until they were seperated by the entourages.

In the interviews with Max Kellerman both fighters had a lot to say. Mayweather told Kellerman that he felt comfortable at the weight and that Cotto looked a little 'dry'. Cotto claimed that he will give Mayweather all he can handle and more and that he had never been more ready for a fight.

I am personally very excited for this fight, more than I have been for any other fight this year, and what makes it even better is that we also get to see a few other great fights before the main event (Irish Prizefighter, McCloskey Vs Corley, Huck Vs Afolabi and Alvarez Vs Mosley).

Former world champion Ricky Hatton has said that he will be backing WBA light-middleweight champion Miguel Cotto in his fight with Floyd Mayweather on Saturday. But, he does reckon he is backing a loser.

Hatton has shared the ring with Mayweather and he knows just what it is like to be in the squared-circle with the greatest of this era. In the 'Hitman's' eyes, there is nobody in the world that is Mayweather's level. However, he does believe that Cotto will not go down without a fight.

"I would rather watch Cotto than Mayweather everyday, but you have to give credit where it is due," said Hatton, 33. "Cotto is a wonderful fighter, but although that I don't really see eye-to-eye with Mayweather he is an absolute boxing genius... I do think fighters like myself and Cotto bring the bestout of Mayweather so people in Las Vegas and watching on BoxNation will see a good fight."

When Hatton and Mayweather met, it was one of the biggest fights of the decades. More than 300,000 fans travelled to Las Vegas to watch the Hitman's brave effort against the P4P No.1 and despite their differences Hatton believes that Mayweather is the best opponent he ever faced. He also believes that the Mayweather-Cotto fight will go the same as his clash with 'Money' Mayweather.

"I think it could have a similar pattern to my fight against Mayweather... It will be hairy scary for a few rounds but I think Mayweather will take the sting out of him and come through on a late stoppage or points."

The Mayweather-Cotto fight takes place on Saturday in Las Vegas. It will be shown live on HBO PPV (America) and BoxNation (UK).

Floyd Mayweather Jr told us today that former promoter and now biggest rival Bob Arum is attempting to sue Mayweather's adviser Leonard Ellerbe over the Yuriorkis Gamboa situation.

In case you haven't heard about what happened between Mayweather Promotions, Top Rank and Gamboa this sums up what happened:

- Gamboa no-shows at press conference for fight with Rios.
- Rumours heard that Gamboa was in talks with Mayweather promotions.
- Gamboa spotted training at Mayweather's gym whilst he was meant to be at the second press conference.
- Top Rank threaten to sue whoever was responsible for Gamboa's no-shows and exit from the promotion
  company.

It is now fight week for Mayweather and Cotto and 'Money' is being his usual self. Whenever it comes to the week of the fight he starts speaking out a bit more and starts to say a few controversial things. This is what he had to say about the Gamboa situation:

"Bob Arum has been filling you all up with his bullshit for years and robbing fighters. He's trying to sue Leonard for Gamboa, knowing that he's been treating his fighter wrong. Gamboa came over here and all this fighter wanted to do is making a living. They've been treating this fighter wrong from the beginning. I'm wrong because I want to treat a fighter right? You know why? Because Don King and Bob Arum can't see out the eyes of a fighter, because they are not a fighter."

Floyd Mayweather is finally starting to come alive for the first time in the build-up to this fight. He also lashed out at Manny Pacquiao and HBO during his rant.

Mayweather Unhappy With HBO Producers!

Floyd 'Money' Mayweather has apologized to his fans for the "poor quality" 24/7 series that they have been producing.

He tweeted saying: "I want to apologize to all of my fans and viewers who watched 24/7 last night. I wasn't pleased with this weeks episode of 24/7. Me and my film team are providing Bentley Weiner with exciting content which she is not using. We really needed the producers from Mayweather-Hatton 24/7 to come back to HBO to give the fans and viewers more excitement."

It may just be that me, you and Mayweather himself have seen all there is to see of 'The Money Team' as most of the time that is what the whole program about. Around 2/3 of the show is shot in Mayweather's gym or house and the other ten minutes are filled up by Mayweather's opponent saying how they will end the reign of Floyd Mayweather. In this case, that person is Miguel Cotto, and as exciting as he is inside the ring... He doesn't do may entertaining things outside of it. Maybe that is another reason why Mayweather is disappointed with this series.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have a 24/7 series about a boxer other than Mayweather and his biggestrival Manny Pacquiao. There are many other exciting fights that are happening soon that the HBO producers have ignored.

The Khan-Peterson rematch would be great for this! It would be very entertaining to see what the two fighters have to say about each other and how their training is going for the biggest fight of both their careers. Even Ortiz Vs Berto or Froch Vs Bute would be a breath of fresh air for the series and it would also give some of the less-known fighters the chance to promote themselves.

Antonio Margarito returns to the ring on May 26th...

Three-time world champion Antonio Margarito is set to fight at the Casino Del Sol, Arizona on May 26th. 

The 34-year old Mexican was rumoured to be considering retirement after losing badly to Miguel Cotto in a grudge rematch last December and also struggling with persistent eye problems but he will now fight again for the 48th fight of his career.

The bout will take place between 154lb and 160lb according Dan Rafael from ESPN who spoke to Top Rank's Carl Moretti on Monday.

An opponent for the has not yet been confirmed but will most likely be announced soon.

This is what Moretti had to say about the situation: "Everything is fine... He went back to his doctor and got everything checked out after the Cotto fight."

"In the fight, the eye was only cut and swollen. No other damage. After the fight New York put him on the medical suspension list but then took him off of it because he got cleared medically in January."

Margarito will likely be given a lower-ranked opponent for his next fight as his confidence needs building after he has lost three of his last four fights.

Mayweather Vs Alvarez could happen soon...

Golden Boy CEO Robert Schaefer has been ranting about Saul Alvarez being good enough to take on P4P No.1 Floyd Mayweather Jr for a very long time. But, nobody has paid that much attention to it.

In the past we all thought it was just a way of building Alavarez's reputation but we can see now that in the weight division Mayweather is now in there is no one else that we will provide him with a challenge if he beats Miguel Cotto. Most people believe now that Mayweather Vs Pacquiao will never happen so a fight with Alvarez is the next best thing. The 21-year old is young, strong and in his prime and Floyd Mayweather is in his mid 30's but he is still classed by many as the greatest fighter in the world.

Oscar De La Hoya has also admitted that a fight between Alvarez and Mayweather is definitely in Golden Boy's long term plans.

"The Alvarez-Mosely winner goes on to bigger and better things, that's a given... They can go on to face the winner of Ortiz-Berto or Mayweather-Cotto," said Golden Boy's main promoter.

Alvarez has appeared as chief support and Mayweather's last two fights and he will do the same on May 5th when he takes on Shane Mosely on the undercard of Mayweather Vs Miguel Cotto.

A fight between these two would be very easy to make as Mayweather is the biggest selling fighter in the world and Alvarez has also started to gain a lot of fans and a lot of popularity. The fight may not happen this year as Mayweather is due to report to prison on June 1st and he has to stay there for a minimum of three months. But, as long as both of the fighters keep on winning,the anticipation will build and somewhere down the line we will see a great fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Floyd 'Money' Mayweather.

The No.1 fighter in the world Floyd Mayweather is teaming up with publisher MYMAG to make a personalized magazine. The magazine will be about many different things including facts about Mayweather's personal life and his favourite magazine content.

The magazine will be a limited edition of 2,500 copies and will feature gold leaf lettering. It will also come with a deck of playing cards and some poker chips.

Behind the scenes pictures and interviews with Mayweather will also be included in the magazine that will be sold in the UK and America.

If you are looking to buy one of these magazines I would do so as soon as they come out as their will be millions of 'die-hard' Mayweather fans that will rush to buy one before they sell out.

Other celebrities that have a MYMAG include P Diddy, Brett Ratner and Olivia Munn.

Floyd Mayweather obviously wanted to be the first boxer to have one as he has repeatedly said that he is the 'perfect' boxer and the fan favourite.

Mayweather is set to fight Miguel Cotto in Las Vegas on May 5th in his first fight at light-middleweight. The magazine will likely be on sale shortly after this.

Another great fight scheduled for May 5th!

The night of boxing on May 5th has just got even better. First they 
gave us Mayweather-Cotto, then they gave us Alvarez-Mosely and now they've given us George Groves Vs Robert Stieglitz and Marco Huck Vs 
Ola Afolabi on a different show. 

British and commonwealth super-middleweight champion George Groves will challenge WBO world champion Stieglitz in a long awaited fight that is 
set to take place in Germany. 

The main event of the card will see WBO cruiserweight champion Marco 
Huck defend his titles in a rematch against Ola Afolabi.

Stieglitz was originally meant to face Mikel Kessler in April (the 
fight had been pushed back from November) but the bout was called off 
after Kessler pulled out and instead chose to fight light-heavyweight Allan Green. Groves was also scheduled to fight a different opponent. 
On May 16th he was going to clash with Kenny Anderson but pulled due to 
a 'back injury'. The same day he was announced the mandatory challenger 
for the WBO title. 

'St George' Groves has done just about everything possible at domestic 
level and is now attempting to make a statement at world level. It is 
sometimes easy to forget that he is only 24 years old when you think of 
everything has done already in his career. But, Stieglitz is a very 
experienced pro that may make Groves look like an un-experienced 
prospect on May 5th. If he doesn't, then Groves may well be a very 
special fighter indeed. 

The first fight between Huck and Afolabi was a very close fight. The 
scorecards read 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112, all in favour of Marco 
Huck. Afolabi is Britain's No.1 ranked cruiserweight and has said many 
times that he will give the fight of his life on May 5th. 

All four of the big fights will be shown live on BoxNation (SKY 456) so 
it is shaping up to be a fantastic day for fight fans all around the 
world.
