Vazquez impresses, Gesta disappoints.

By Jack Price @PriceyJ97.

Miguel Vazquez had one plan and one plan only when he stepped in the ring to defend his IBF lightweight title against Mercito Gesta last night (December 8th). And that plan was to keep Gesta at a distance and not get drawn into a brawl. Vazquez executed this plan perfectly and out-boxed Gesta in every second of every minute of every round.

After facing a lot of criticism for his lacklustre performances in recent fights Vazquez fought this fight like a true champion. Gesta however, just fought like he was not interested.

Right from the off Vazquez rushed out and began to pop his long jab in the face of his shorter and stockier opponent. It was also clear from the very beginning that Gesta seemed to be lacking enthusiasm. The Filipino seemed more interested in looking up at the big screen above the ring than actually hitting his opponent. There were a few short bursts of action from Gesta but he lacked the velocity that he has become famous for. Vazquez didn't really have to come out of 2nd, maybe even 3rd gear, and boxed his way to a very wide unanimous decision (117-111, 119-109, 118-110).

There definitely wasn't something right about Gesta in this fight, and unfortunately the poor performance has damaged his reputation. He will no longer have the same value as he did before this fight took place. That value can be won back but its going to take a very long time. He needs to drop back down a level or two and slowly work his way back up to world level and this time make sure that he is ready.

For Vazquez now, it is just onwards and upwards! He's come back strong from some average performances and proven to us that he does to deserve to be champion. In an extremely competitive lightweight division at this current time, there is a whole world of opportunities out there for him.
