Gavin impresses once again!

By Jack Price @PriceyJ97.

It was a must-win fight for Frankie Gavin tonight (January 18th) when he stepped in the ring with tough domestic welterweight Jason Welborn. For people, including myself, to really believe the hype, he had to put on a top class performance.

And the 27-year old did not let us down! Almost not putting a single foot wrong throughout the whole time the fight lasted, the Birmingham-born man proved just too good for his over-matched opponent. The skill has always been there for the 2007 World Amateur Champion but a few of his critics have always questioned his power. However, he proved he definitely does pack a punch when he finished Welborn with some devastating body shots in round 7.

We have to give credit to Welborn for taking the fight and giving it everything he had, but the 26-year old just simply wasn't good enough to compete with the man that stood in front of him. He was clearly confused by Gavin's dazzling footwork and hand speed and no matter how hard he tried he just couldn't land with those powerful shots he was loading up with.

This was Gavin's first defence of the British welterweight title that he picked up back in November. The highly-rated prospect looks set for an exciting 2013 with potential domestic showdowns with the likes of Denton Vassell and Lee Purdy. As always British boxing just grows stronger and stronger with fighters like this coming through. The future looks very bright!
