This weekend we have the eagerly anticipated Featherweight contest between two exciting & fan friendly Mexican’s for the WBC title, on Saturday evening in Carson, California we have a fight card promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, it will be WBC champion Abner Mares (27) with a record of 26-0-1 14ko’s making the first defense of his WBC Featherweight title vs fellow Mexican & known danger man in Jhonny Gonzalez (31) with a record of 54-8-0 46ko’s.

This fight promises to be a exciting encounter between two gutsy fighter’s who fight with pride & passion, Abner Mares who is a former IBF Bantamweight & former WBC super Bantamweight champion that moved up to Featherweight in his last outing vs Daniel Ponce De Leon and snatched the WBC Featherweight title to add to his fast growing belt collection by defeating Ponce De Leon in a eye catching 9th round knockout after seemingly dominating most of the fight with the occasional close round. Since turning pro in 2005 Mares has made quick progress up the ladder in the sport of Boxing.

After doing his apprenticeship through the early stage of his career Abner Mares made all boxing fans take note when in 2010 he beat dangerous puncher Vic Darchinyan via a split decision winning the IBO & WBC silver Bantamweight title, mares than fought Joseph Agbeko for the IBF Bantamweight title winning via a majority decision before beating Eric Morel & Anselmo Moreno and last but not least his most recent victory over Ponce De Leon.

This Saturdays opponent, in his first defense of the WBC Featherweight title Abner Mares faces Jhonny Gonzalez who is a former WBO Bantamweight & former WBC featherweight champion of the world. Gonzalez has always been a dangerous fighter throughout his career with very good power and quite tall 5’7 at the lower weights he has always been in exciting fights even when he lost, but Styles make fights and it a strange scenario but not so strange in boxing, Gonzalez lost his WBC title via technical decision vs Ponce De Leon the man Abner Mares knocked out to win the WBC Featherweight title he will be defending on Saturday.

The resume of jhonny Gonzalez speaks for itself he has mixed it with the best over the years & only being 31 years old can be deceptive as its widely regarded Gonzalez is known as a “old” 31 in boxing terminology which seems to hint his had his share of hard fights. He has losses vs top fighter’s such as Israel Vasquez, Gerry Penalosa, Toshiaki Nishioka & Daniel Ponce De Leon. Since his loss to Ponce De Leon Gonzales has gone 2-0 VS B level opposition in comparison to Saturdays opponent & WBC Featherweight champion of the world Abner Mares.

One thing is for sure this fight will be fought at a high tempo from the start I expect Mares to work the body of the taller man, Mares 5’4 & a half & Gonzalez 5’7.Mares is known for mixing up his punch selection from body to head & having good technical ability. In Jhonny Gonzalez we have a veteran who will look to try gain any advantage in the ring using his size and experience, I expect Mares to be busy early setting a pace Gonzalez can’t keep with. I think we will see some good exchanges & a exciting fight as is the case in a majority cases of Mexican vs Mexican fights. Make sure you tune in to watch these two guys put on a fan friendly fight. I expect mares to win, possibly by stoppage during the middle rounds. One thing is for sure if Mares wins it could lead to the fight which a lot of fight fans wanna see Abner Mares vs Miguel Mikey Garcia or Nonito Doniare both of Top Rank promoted by Bob Arum. Enjoy the evenings boxing and make sure you don’t miss this fight as it promises entertainment & excitement.
