The Fans Have Voted: Alvarez Vs Trout

57% PICKING AUSTIN TROUT TO BEAT SAUL ALVAREZ!

The biggest unification bout of the year takes place this weekend when WBC light-middleweight champion and Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (41-0, 30 KO's) takes on WBA titlist Austin 'No Doubt' Trout (26-0, 14 KO's) in front of 50,000 passionate fight fans at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

On paper this is a real 50/50 fight; Two undefeated champions with equally impressive records taking on the toughest possible challenge at 154lb. Now, in the build-up to this fight it seemed to me that Canelo would enter as the slight favorite and he still does with the bookies but in our most recent poll on Twitter (@BoxingOpinions) Austin Trout emerged as the surprise favorite with the majority of the voters.

Here are the results:

Austin Trout to win - 57%

Points: 100%      KO: 0%

Saul Alvarez to win - 43%

Points: 25%        KO: 75%

So as you can see, the majority of the fans in this vote have picked Austin Trout to win by unaimous decision. In fact, everyone that picked Trout to win said it would be by points, no one expects him to get the stoppage in this fight. A lot of people still went for Alvarez and most of them believe he will get the KO victory, something that will look extremely impressive on his record.

The results actually reflect the fighters' styles perfectly. Trout is the more upright technical boxer who will look to get on the back foot and go to the decision, whereas Alvarez will be looking for any opportunity to turn this into a toe-to-toe war because that's his style of fight. And if it does end up as a slugfest you can't look past a Canelo KO win.

My pick is Austin Trout by unanimous decision but in a very, very close fight. And just remember, Canelo is Oscar De La Hoya & Richard Schaefer's "Golden Boy", so we could end up seeing some controversy here. But hopefully not.
